Moorhouse, remembered especially for constructing the Lyttelton–Christchurch railway and its major tunnel, played a key role in the region’s early development. The bronze statue, created by G. A. Lawson, was unveiled by Governor Sir William Jervois, with speeches highlighting Moorhouse’s contributions. Another statue in the city commemorates J. R. Godley, a founder of the Canterbury settlement.
