The Illustrated London News was a weekly publication founded in 1842 as the world’s first illustrated newspaper. Although produced in Britain, it reported widely on international events, including New Zealand’s colonial conflicts, goldfields, politics, and social developments. Throughout 1842–1902 it became a significant visual record of Victorian Britain and its empire. Its coverage of New Zealand during this time reflected the editorial perspectives and cultural norms of the period, providing British readers with illustrations and narratives shaped by contemporary views of colonisation, Indigenous peoples, and global affairs.
