SummaryBrief biography of historian Michael King (1945-2004), whose personal collection of books is available in the Mātangireia Collection on Level 4 of the University of Waikato Library. Main Body
Michael King was one of New Zealand’s foremost historians. He had close ties with Hamilton and the University of Waikato, having worked for the Waikato Times and having gained his M.A. in History and Ph.D. at this university. He wrote articles for the early University of Waikato student newspaper. In 1994 he was the Universities Writer in Residence and used this time to work on his biography of Frank Sargeson. He was also commissioned to write a history of the University for the 40th Anniversary, but unfortunately passed away early in 2004 and this was never completed.
The University of Waikato Library has taken charge of a collection of books that formed part of Michael King's personal library. His family generously offered part of Michael’s own personal library to the University Library to supplement the material held in Mātangireia. The 600 books are shelved on Level 4 near Mātangireia Pacific.
