Date1871Title[Mackay's sketch map 1871]DescriptionSketch map of tribal districts and early 19th century battlegrounds in the Tauranga and Waikato Districts.
This map was used in the Māori Land Court, held at Fort Britomart, Auckland, in January 1871 before Judges F.E. Maning and A.H. Munro. The action concerned Māori ownership of Te Aroha Block (coloured yellow on the map). Judgement was given in favour of Ngatimaru of Marutuahu Confederation against Ngatihaua, the principal of the great Waikato tribes, under Te Waharoa. The map is a sketch drawn by Mr James Mackay, a surveyor on behalf of the successful claimants.
As the map was drawn in 1871, after the New Zealand Wars, it shows the confiscation boundaries and the positions of the Miranda – Queen’s chain of redoubts.
