SummaryBrief biography of Professor Martin Lodge (1954-2024), the first Professor of Music at the University of Waikato. Includes links to the Martin Lodge archive collection and related organisations. Main Body
Professor Martin Lodge was a pioneering figure in the University of Waikato’s Music Department, becoming its first appointed Professor and playing a central role in developing the programme from undergraduate to doctoral levels.
He collaborated with Dr Hirini Melbourne and Dr William Dart to create a curriculum that balanced Māori, popular, and classical music traditions. Lodge conceived and fundraised for Te Kohinga Taonga Puoro, the university’s collection of traditional instruments. These can be viewed on level four of Te Iho o Te Manawataki.
His scholarly work on New Zealand music historiography is widely regarded as foundational and his work is heard each year at Graduation as he composed the processional music for the ceremonies.
When the decision to build a dedicated performing arts center was made, he helped design and fundraise for the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts.
In November 2022 a concert was performed at the Academy of Performing Arts celebrating his life and music. This can be viewed here.
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor in September 2023.
