Situated 11 miles from Auckland City, Waiheke Island has an area of twenty-seven square miles and is sixteen miles in length, varying from half a mile to seven miles in width. Waiheke means "cascading waters". To the Maori the island was always Te Motu-arai-roa, "The Long Sheltering island". The island is served by amphibian aircraft, the hydrofoil "Manu-wai", and a launch service. With beautiful beaches, sheltered and warm, this island is a gem of the Waitemata Harbour."
