The Young Socialists was formed as a national organisation during the 1972 elections, in support of the Socialists for Labour campaign initiated by the Socialist Action League. Its aim was to champion the struggles of young people against oppression and exploitation.
The Young Socialist magazine was established to help develop the socialist press in New Zealand and to address the problems and concerns of young people of the day, presenting a strategy to bring about effective change in the areas that affected their lives. The first two issues were published by the Auckland University Young Socialists and after this it was published by the New Zealand Young Socialists based in Wellington.
The magazine covered topics including political analysis, women's rights, abortion, Māori rights, education, student protests, and national and international events.
Young Socialist ran from March 1975 to April/May 1979.
