Douglas Seymour was a barrister, solicitor, and formerly the RSA general secretary. Seymour was also the founding president of the University of South Auckland Society. This society was part of a group of locals who initiated a petition to establish a university for people living in the Waikato region. Thus, this prompted the establishment of Hamilton Teachers' College and the opening of the University of Waikato in 1964.
Bruce Wallace presented three boxes of papers, documents, and content regarding the case for the founding of both the University of Waikato and the Teachers Training College for South Auckland to the University of Waikato Library.
